St. Paul, MN 55113
RE: LUP< existing 28 year-old septic/sewer system.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Northrup:
We are currently holding your land use permit untIl you have your existing system
inspected.
The ecisting septic tank is a 750-gallon steel tank and 2- 5 '/z' by 7' drywells with an
approcicnate total capacity of 252 squaze feet. Current Code requires a 750-gallon septic
tank and approxicnate 429 square foot seepage bed in the best of soils. If the soils aze
finer than sands, [he bed may require 600-700 square feet. As you can see the seepage
pits are grossly undersized and the steeltank may be rusted out. Please keep in mind that
the system is 28 years old, average life-span of systems maybe 15-25 years.
We will request the following options:
1. Get a new soil test, sanitary permit and install a new system.
2. Or, contact a licensed plumbedsoil tester to inspect and pump the existing septic tank,
inspect the bafIles, inspect the drywells and do one (1) soil boring by the drywells to a
depth of 3 feet below the existing drywells.
If all is OK, have the plumber/soil tester sign the inspection repoR, we'll allow you to sign
the affidavit for undersizing of the ecistion system.
If any componen[ fails we will require that you install a code-complying system for the
number of bedrooms you aze disclosing.
Enclosed fmd a list of licensed/certified plumbers and soil testers. If you have any
questions please call me at phone number listed above.
Sincerely,
Merton "Mac" Maki
