Re: Bethel BapYist Church Signs
On November 29, 2005 sign permits #04-012 and#04-013 were issued for the installation
of two "cross-type" signs adjacent to State highway 77 for the Bethel Baptist Church.
Both applications indicated that each sign would be located off of the highway right-of-
way(50' from the highway centerline). One of the signs has been erected (#04-013).
Earlier this week this office received an inquiry about that sign- its size and location with
respect to the roadway. Upon investigation Eric determined that, while the sign "post"
was 50' from the centerline, the cross-member was only 45' from the highway centerline.
It was after reviewing the permits that it was realized that the ordinance allows only one
such sign on this roadway. Eric wrote a letter to the church explaining the situation.
Today three members of the church came to the office to discuss this matter—the pastor,
Sherry Burdette, Church Clerk and another church member.
Afrer explaining setback requirements (setbacks are measured to the closest point of the
structure—the cross-member and that the ordinance permits only two such signs adjacent
to this highway) the following compromise was reached.
• A refund would be made to the church for the second sign permit (#04-
012). The sign has been constructed but not erected. Rational—the
ordinance provides for only a single sign.
• The existing sign will be allowed to remain in place (encroaching by five
feet to the cross-member). Rational —the sign post is set in 300 pounds of
concrete. The church members were informed that if the DOT should
raise an issue or if this office received criticism about the encroachment,
that the sign would have to be made conforming.

Dear Sherry:
On April 20, 2005, I addressed an anonymous complaint about a large cross too close to
the state highway at the above property. Upon inspection of the property, I noticed the
cross and measured only 45' from the centerline of State Highway 27/77 to the closest
part of the sign.
According to the sign permit, the sign would be located 50' from the centerline of the
state highway and on your property. Please relocate the sign as to meet all requirements.
After researching the two sign permits in our office and reviewing the sign ordinance, I
also noticed that you are only able to place one sign for each highway upon which the
property faces. Our office made a mistake in issuing you two permits to have two signs
on the above property (See enclosed copy of Sec. 5.0 Signs in the Sawyer County Zoning
Ordinance). Please construct and place only one sign on the property. Sawyer County
Zoning will void the sign permit 04-012 and will reimburse the cost of the permit.
Please respond to this letter before April 29, 2005 to discuss these issues.
